42. Jay Hammond – Just Let Them Play, Coaching Elite Teams, and Defining Expectations, host William Glass sits down with Jay Hammond a championship-winning soccer coach. We zoom in to the similarities between sports and business. You’ll hear Jay discuss how he approaches building championship-winning teams from utilizing personal goal setting with his players to his approach to understanding his team’s strengths and weaknesses. Jay has a humble leadership approach that every leader can learn from. 

Jay and William have known each other since they were 3 years old both going to school and playing sports together. William has always admired Jay for his mental toughness, insightfulness, and his incredible attitude. You’ll hear Jay open up about some of the early physical challenges he faced as a kid.

Note this episode uses some terms that are specific to youth soccer in the United States such as ODP which stands for Olympic Development Program and a few references unique to Birmingham, Alabama.

About Jay Hammond

Jay Hammond is a director of coaching at Birmingham United Soccer Association. Jay played both college football and soccer. He graduated from the University of Alabama at Birmingham with a degree in Business Administration. Jay coaches a number of competitive boys and girls soccer teams ranging from under 11 up to under 19s. As a state championship-winning coach, Jay focuses on coaching his players to be the best versions of themselves both on and off the field.

Following the death of George Floyd and truly seeing the reality of Black Americans in our society, host William Glass posted on Social Media that he would use this platform to be an advocate for People of Color. Randall and Will coordinated this episode to tell his story as a Black man building a successful career in corporate America. 

Randall’s Bio

Randall Ledet Jr. is a sales executive for Gartner where he works with leading technology providers grow and scale their businesses. Randall has achieved winner’s circle, Gartner’s top sales award every year since joining the company at the start of 2017.

Before Gartner, Randall spent time in the supply chain organizations of UPS & DHL. Randall boasts a bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain & Logistics from the University of Houston. Now living Atlanta Randall’s focus is on continuing to build success in his career, relationships, and life.

We discuss his experience, what drives him, and how Randall has overcome depressive episodes. I remember when Randall first joined Gartner and am happy to be able to share his insights and what has helped him be successful in his sales career.

Austin is the son of a Super Bowl Champion and a proud alum of the University of Maryland where he played collegiate football. Austin played in 49 of 50 career games as a walk-on who earned a full scholarship for the Terrapins. Austin’s college football experience cemented the grit, work ethic, and raw passion that oozes from his spirit.

By day Austin is a sales leader for Avanade, the world’s leading Microsoft service implementation partner. There he liaises with Fortune 500 businesses to facilitate the utilization of technology as a competitive differentiator to drive sustained growth. While he enjoys working with senior business leaders to support organization growth, his true passions lie in fostering personal growth & development. Austin has a passion for supporting people in finding their purpose to be the best versions of themselves.

For Austin, 2020 and beyond is dedicated towards purpose identification and alignment. His sole focus is to uncover the most important question we all must answer, what am I here on Earth to accomplish? Living a purpose-driven life is tied closely towards his hyper intentional pursuit of personal growth & learning. Austin strives to be a resource to support others on their purpose journey. He’s enrolled in Accomplishment Coaching, a program that trains ontological coaching methodology. In addition, Austin co-hosts a podcast called Purpenthicity with Deric Cahill.
